Verlene Muriel
(House) Neuway
September 17, 1933 — November 21, 2024
Andover
Verlene Muriel {Van Horne} House Neuway , a remarkable woman of boundless energy, love, and spirit, passed away peacefully at her home in Andover, Kansas on November 21, 2024; at the age of 91. Born on September 17, 1933, in Salina, Kansas, Verlene was the youngest of three children to Verlyn Howard and Muriel Easter {Bradshaw} Van Horne. Verlene's early years were difficult as tragedy struck the family in 1939 when Verlene's brother Dean passed away. When her brother Daryl passed in 1942 it left Verlene as the only sibling, creating an even stronger bond with her parents.
From an early age, Verlene's zest for life was evident. She attended Oakdale Elementary and later graduated from Salina High School, where she was a proud Baton Twirler and Band Majorette, dazzling audiences with her Marimba performances. Following high school, Verlene made history as the first X-ray Technician Student at Asbury Hospital in Salina, paving the way for a career in healthcare.
It was during her studies at Asbury that Verlene met her lifelong love, Clinton Dale House. They married on December 25, 1952, beginning a nearly 57-year journey of love, partnership, and adventure. Together, they raised two children: Sherry, born in 1953, and Sherman, born in 1956.
Family was central to Verlene's life and alongside Clinton and her children, raised horses while participating in parades and community events such as Wagons to Wings and the Salina Cavalcade. Later in life, she became a trusted manager at a doctor's office, balancing work, family, and a vibrant social life with ease.
Verlene and Clinton shared a passion for projects, from buying and renovating houses to exploring the world of dog shows. They bred and showed various dog breeds, including Border Collies, Aussies, coon dogs, Boxers, Bostons, and French Bulldogs, earning numerous awards and forging lifelong friendships. Verlene's creative touch extended to crafting braided leashes, a hobby she cherished and pursued with love from 1985 to 2017.
Known for her spirited personality and quick wit, Verlene embraced life fully. She was unapologetically herself—opinionated, fun-loving, and always ready to share her thoughts. Her adventurous streak led her to pick up belly dancing with friends, a hobby that epitomized her vibrant energy and zest for life.
In 2017, Verlene reconnected with Keith Neuway, a fellow dog enthusiast from her past. Their connection blossomed, and they married on May 13, 2018, in Abilene. Together, they embarked on a new chapter filled with travel, laughter, and "goofing off" in their RV. Summers spent in Texas with friends and afternoons shopping at Goodwill—one of Verlene's favorite pastimes—brought her immense joy.
Verlene is survived by her husband, Keith; her loving children, Sherry Lynn Housos (Ted) and Sherman Dale House (Monica); her grandchildren, Chris House (Amy), Tiffany Ippolito (Paul), Olivia Keefover (Nate), Nathan House (Valerie), Matthew, and Elizabeth; nine great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; six great-great-grandchildren; and countless other family members and friends who were touched by her love.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Verlyn and Muriel; her brothers, Daryl and Deane; and her beloved first husband, Clinton, with whom she will be laid to rest.
A graveside service to honor Verlene's incredible life will be held at 10:00 a.m., on December 7, 2024, at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, 2020 E. Iron, Salina, Kansas. Well behaved dogs will be welcomed at the service.
Verlene's legacy is one of love, laughter, and an adventurous spirit. She lived life fully, embraced every moment, and leaves behind a tapestry of memories woven with joy, resilience, and devotion. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
