Val was born in Ness City, Kansas on February 14, 1932 to John and Estephania {Melandez} Perez. With his youth spent in Ness City Val graduated from Ness City High and played basketball for the school team. While there he worked in a pool hall which earned his love for the game very early. Val joined the Air Force in 1952 and met the love of his life Carole Duperrouzel while stationed in Port St. Joe, Florida. While serving in the Air Force he was awarded the, Good Conduct, National Defense Service medal, Korean Service medal and United Nations service medal. He was sent to Japan from 1954 to 1956 and upon his return married Carole in New York in 1956. After retirement Val went to work for Koch Industries for 5 years. That love of pool showed up around in Wichita as Val was a well-known player around the tournaments and leagues, often winning and considered by many as one of the best pool players in Wichita. Val's greatest accomplishments were his children and family; and his involvement and support in his church. For his children Val was the greatest dad, coaching many of their sports teams over the years. Within the St. Margaret Mary church Val was an usher, a lector, Eucharistic Minister; especially to homebound parishioners; and printed the church bulletin for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Layman's Club. Val was a quiet, kind and patient person who was very giving of himself and his time volunteering at the Guadalupe Clinic and St. Francis of Assisi School and was very proud and honored to be a longtime Red Cross Blood Donor. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke with those closest to him. Dancing was a passion for Val and Carole and they loved to dance at the parish dances; they also enjoyed traveling together to Mexico, Alaska, Canada and more.
