Steven "Steve"
Eugene Fields
August 16, 1951 — November 28, 2024
Wichita
Steven Eugene "Steve" Fields , lovingly known as "Sarge" by his working peers, lived a life of service, love, and quiet strength. Born on August 16, 1951, in Wichita, Kansas, to Sherman and Geneva (Copeland) Fields, Steve embodied resilience, devotion, and kindness throughout his 73 remarkable years. He departed this world on November 28, 2024, leaving an enduring legacy etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
After attending South High School and completing his GED, Steve answered the call to serve his country at the age of 17, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1968. He served until 1971, then reenlisted in 1972, dedicating himself to his role until 1976. His time in the military was during the Vietnam War serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he displayed courage and an unwavering commitment to his friends and his nation.
After his military service, Steve returned to Wichita and began a distinguished career in the aviation industry. He contributed his exceptional talents as a metal fabrication specialist to Cessna, Boeing, and later Spirit AeroSystems after they acquired Boeing. Among his many accomplishments, he worked on parts for "Doc," one of the last surviving B-29 Superfortresses, and even components for Air Force One, a testament to his expertise and dedication.
Steve's life was defined by his ability to connect with people. Whether he was sharing a joke, offering a helping hand, or simply listening, he made a profound impact on everyone he encountered. Known for his gentle demeanor and a hint of orneriness, he was the kind of person who could make anyone feel at home in his presence.
Outside of work, Steve was a man of many passions. He found joy in woodworking, scuba diving during his 40s, and participating in shooting sports and coyote hunting with his son. But fishing held a special place in his heart; it was more than a pastime—it was a way he shared love and created memories with those close to him.
Steve's family was his greatest treasure. He was a devoted father to his son, Steven Michael "Mike" Fields, and a proud grandfather to Avery, Trisha, and Carina. His love extended to his brother Jeff Fields and his cherished partner of eight years, Bobbi Lee. Steve now joins his beloved wife, Patricia "Patty" (Perkins) Fields, his daughter Shannon Fields, his parents, Sherman and Geneva, and his brother Scott Fields, who preceded him in passing.
To honor Steve's memory, the family invites donations to the Gary Sinise Foundation, an organization that supports veterans and their families, a cause close to his heart.
As we bid farewell to Steve, we celebrate a life filled with purpose, kindness, and love. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and steadfast presence will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him. Rest in peace, Sarge, and thank you for a lifetime of service and love.
