Sophia Ann
Altenhofen
February 8, 1974 — April 18, 2026
Park City
ALTENHOFEN, SOPHIA ANN, 52 , passed away on April 18, 2026, at Via Christi St. Francis, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 8, 1974, in Wichita, Kansas, Sophia was the cherished daughter of Charles and Theresa {Flores} Adams.
Sophia's life was rooted in family, resilience, and a deep compassion for others. She spent her early years in Augusta, briefly living in Pittsburgh before returning to Andover, where she attended school and graduated from Andover High School. During her school years, Sophia's vibrant spirit shone brightly—she was a talented softball pitcher, coached cheerleading and a familiar friendly face at Big Cheese Pizza in Andover.
A lifelong learner, Sophia was always seeking knowledge and new experiences. She earned her CNA license and dedicated herself to caring for others, a role that came naturally to her generous and empathetic heart. Later, she pursued and obtained her paralegal certificate, reflecting her determination and curiosity. Though she found fulfillment in her professional endeavors, nothing compared to the joy she found in her family—especially her children and grandchildren.
Sophia treasured the simple, meaningful moments in life. In the early years of raising her children she found her greatest joy in the outdoors, especially in the simple, meaningful moments spent fishing and camping with her family. Some of the most treasured memories were the quiet evening spent fishing for hours at a small pond in Andover surrounded by her children, husband and family, where her time seemed to slow and her happiness was unmistakable. Those moments of togetherness, patience, and love are a lasting part of her legacy. In the recent years Sophia enjoyed watching General Hospital with her mom, spending time with her kids and grandbabies, and expressing herself through her many creative talents. She was wonderfully artistic, often knitting, crocheting, journaling, writing, or drawing.
Despite the challenges she faced during her illness, Sophia remained remarkably strong, witty, and full of life. Her laughter was contagious, her smile constant, and her ability to uplift others never wavered. She had a gift for listening and being present—someone you could call at any hour, knowing she would be there with understanding and care.
True to her nurturing spirit, Sophia was selfless and giving, often putting the needs of others before her own. She would give whatever she had—sometimes even her last dollar—to help someone in need. Her love extended beyond people to her cherished animals, who were an important part of her family.
On March 10, 2026, while in the hospital, Sophia was baptized by Chaplain Chris—an important and peaceful moment in her journey of faith.
Sophia leaves behind a legacy of love through her family: her beloved mother, Theresa Adams; her sons, Patrick Adams and Gordon Shaver; her daughter, Valerie Mears (Austyn); and her treasured grandchildren, Alice and Gracelyn Mears. She is also survived by her brothers, Charlie Adams (LaDonna) and their daughter Nakaya, and Chad Adams (Cayla) and their children Faith and Michael; and her sister, Debby Houck. Sophia's love extended to her "other" children—her Sphynx cat Niko, Double Headed Yellow parrot Pedro, German Shepherd Charlie, and her dogs Desi and Connie.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Adams, Jr.; her husband, Ryan Altenhofen; and her beloved cat, Tyson.
Sophia will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her humor, her strength, and the deep love she gave so freely. Her presence brought comfort, laughter, and warmth to all who knew her, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at NewSpring Church, 12200 E. 21st St. E., Wichita, Kansas. In honor of Sophia's life and generous spirit, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 3450 N. Rock Road, Suite 204, Wichita, KS 67226.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
