Rose Ella Nelson , affectionately known to all as "Mama Rose," was born on June 28, 1940, in Inman, Kansas, to Thomas and Fern Stoughton. Her early years were spent in Inman, where she graduated from high school and began to chart a life defined by resilience, kindness, and a touch of mischief.

Shortly after graduation, Rose met the love of her life, Richard. Theirs was a story both adventurous and enduring, including a journey to Oklahoma to be married. Despite a snowstorm derailing their plans and a dramatic return home—where her father greeted them on the porch with a shotgun—their devotion was unshakable. Together, they built a family, welcoming three beloved children whose lives would be shaped by their parents' love and spirit.

Richard's military career meant a life of frequent moves, and Rose rose to each new challenge with determination and grace. To help support her family, she drove school bus, demonstrating her willingness to do whatever was needed for those she loved. In 1969, the family settled in Buhler, bravely starting a dairy farm with no previous experience—testament to their grit and optimism.

In 1983, the Nelsons moved to New Mexico, pursuing opportunity in the oil fields. During those years, Rose worked in various roles, always adapting and giving her all. In 2001, they relocated to Towanda, Kansas, where she became the office manager for a construction company, a position she held with pride until her retirement.

Rose was known far and wide for her generous heart and her desire to help in any way she could. Tender yet tinged with a delightful ornery streak, she touched the lives of many and was cherished by all who came to know her as "Mama Rose." Her warmth and wisdom created a welcoming home, not just for her family, but for all in her orbit.

In her spare time, Rose found joy in tending to her plants, solving puzzles, traveling, and reading whenever possible. These simple pleasures spoke to her curiosity and her appreciation for the beauty in everyday life.

She is survived by her loving children: Rick (Janet) Nelson, Ryan (Brooke Burch) Nelson, and Robin (Jerry) Dishman; her cherished grandchildren: Metta Sanchez, Joshua Nelson, and Kyle Dishman; and her great-grandchild, Baden Siegman.

Rose was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Thomas and Fern Stoughton; her husband, Richard Nelson; and her sister, Roxanna Jackson.
