Roland Wayne
Hayden
July 13, 1926 — February 10, 2021
Wichita
Roland Wayne (R.W. or Jim) Hayden was born on July 13, 1926 in Emporia, KS to Roy and Inez (Wygle) Hayden. He had a younger sister, Marilyn. He grew up in several locations in the Flint hills of eastern Kansas. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1944.
Immediately following H.S. he joined the Army Air Corp and was enrolled in (pilot) training when World War II ended. Upon release from the service he was briefly married to Bonnie Jean Clapton also from the Hamilton/Madison area. They lived in McPherson and had a son Loren Lynn.
After a divorce Jim moved to Wichita for a short period. There he attended Zion Methodist Church where he met his future bride, Dubylene Stinson.
Jim and Duby were married on September 21, 1950 in Clovis, N.M. Three boys were eventually born to this union. They returned to McPherson, KS where Jim began a 20 year career with Farmers Alliance insurance company. Starting as a traveling claims adjuster, Jim worked his way up to Vice President. In 1964-65 Jim took an assignment to Florida to manage a new branch office. It was there he and Duby developed a love for sand, sea, and especially warm weather.
In 1967 the family moved from McPherson to Wichita, where Jim began a second career with the Veterans Administration. In that same year he also established R.W. Hayden and Sons, an entity under which he bought, sold, and fixed wrecked cars, raised Angus 4-H cattle, restored and rented property, and a plethora of miscellaneous activities.
Jim retired in 1974. They began to travel the U.S. extensively in Airstream travel trailers. This travel bug grew, and in 1980 they created Slo-Poke Caravans and began leading bi-annual caravans in Europe and Northern Africa - eventually visiting the majority of countries in Europe both communist and free.
While still maintaining a home in Wichita, they began wintering on Cudjoe Key from the early 90's until 2013 when Duby's Alzheimer's forced them to return 'to cold weather' as Jim would say.
Jim and Duby again lived together at one, one, eight, one, one until Duby required additional care and passed in 2017.
Jim continued to live in Wichita until very shortly before his death on February 10, 2021.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, sister Marilyn, daughter-in-law Brenda, and beloved wife of 67 years, Duby.
Surviving to mourn his loss are sons Lynn (Sterling, KS), Roy (Andover, KS), Robert (Lincoln, NE), and Dick (Wichita, KS), daughters-in-law Nadine, Denise, and Sandy, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And lots of fellow travelers around the world.
Private family services will be held.
