Phillip
Swart
May 31, 1941 — February 4, 2024
Wichita
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Phillip Swart, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, on February 4, 2024, at the age of 82. Phillip spent his final days surrounded by love at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice at St. Francis, leaving us peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, on May 31, 1941, to Benton Eugene Swart, Sr., and Martha Marie {Barbeau} Swart, Phillip was the third of eleven spirited children. He spent his childhood immersed in the close-knit community of Wichita, attending St. Patrick Grade School where he discovered his passions for swimming and basketball. Phillip carried his basketball interests into his years at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School, graduating in the Class of 1959 with fond memories and friendships that would last a lifetime. Phillip also treasured his time in Boy Scouts earning the highest rank of Eagle Scout and several grandchildren followed in his footsteps.
After high school, Phillip briefly attended seminary in San Antonio, exploring a path that ultimately led him in a different direction. His adventurous spirit led him to work closely with the Carney brothers at the original Pizza Hut before embarking on a remarkable 20-year career at Boeing, from which he retired in 1999.
Phillip's zeal for life was evident in his hobbies. Phillip enjoyed countless hunting trips with his son and was an avid sailor. Phillip raced catamarans at Cheney Lake and even competed in a Prindle Nationals Regatta off the coast of Florida. Phillip also had a strong love for his dogs.
A pillar of his community, Phillip was actively involved in the St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church and contributed his time and energy to the Knights of Columbus. Known for his unique vocabulary, creating words like "photoretys," "gymaleptic," and "flaptadow," Phillip brought laughter and joy to all who knew him. His happy-go-lucky nature, chivalry, and generosity knew no bounds, always ready with a giant hug that could lift your spirits and feet off the ground.
Phillip leaves behind a legacy of love with his wife, Jackolin; children Stephanie Lynn Woody (Marshall), Steve Swart (Angie), Stephanie Bartel (Joshua), Patricia Ring (Vince), and Michelle Kelley; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and a multitude of family and friends who were touched by his kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters-in-law Maxine Swart and Janet Swart, and great-grandson Axl Nygaard.
A rosary will be held in Phillip's honor on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 123 N. Andover Rd., Andover, with visitation and fellowship to follow. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the same location on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Phillip will be laid to rest at Ascension Cemetery on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Phillip's memory to the St. Vincent De Paul Knights of Columbus, honoring his dedication and service.
Phillip's warmth, generosity, and vibrant spirit will be dearly missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him .
