Mary Ann
Bonine
September 9, 1936 — June 6, 2022
Benton
Bonine, Mary Ann (DeVaney) 85 , passed away June 6, 2022.
Mary Ann Bonine was born September 9, 1936 in Augusta Georgia to Wilbur and Alberta (Coates) DeVaney.
She attended Catholic boarding school for part of her elementary education, which, from the stories she told, she didn't like it or the nuns.
Around age 10, she took a ship to Germany and lived there for a few years with her mother and stepdad Al Morgan, who was in the Army. She told of being seasick on the ship the first week or so, until an old guy told her to just not think about it, and then she was fine for the rest of the trip!
She married (James) Vernon Bowen at a young age, and moved around a lot as a young military family.
She had one sister, Kathy Jo Morgan, born June 1, 1958.
Her daughters, Linda Carol (Bowen) Smith was born July 15, 1958, and Sandra (Sandy) Lee (Bowen) Gohring was born February 13, 1960.
After Vernon and Mary divorced, Mary and her two daughters lived with her mother, stepdad, and sister for a few years. They lived in Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Kansas; moving to where jobs could be found in the restaurant business.
She met and dated Philip L. Bonine in Wichita Kansas, Philip was a cook at a restaurant on North Broadway in Wichita, where Mary also worked. They were married on March 25, 1966.
The last few years brought problems with her osteoporosis, and the physical limitations of that. She always said she still felt young in her mind, but the body didn't. Not able to do as much, she said she didn't "want to be here" anymore. She was ready to go.
Mary and Phil lived most of their married life in rural Benton Kansas. As a couple, they raised Linda and Sandy, went to Lake Parsons regularly for boating and skiing, did beekeeping, traveled to visit family and friends, and vacationed in Alaska (among other places). They also had one particular dog she really loved named Daisy, and kept parrots of various sizes over the years.
The family attended Benton Christian Church, where she became a baptized believer in Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.
Mary loved to travel. She would tell you she had to wait until her daughters were old enough and could afford to take "big" trips. She would travel with them and her grandchildren around the continental U.S. and Hawaii to zoos and aquariums, and science and education centers. She liked going to Hard Rock Cafés, Joe's Crab Shack restaurants, and oyster bars on these trips.
Her first out-of-the-country trip as an adult was to Australia. She had also always wanted to go to Africa, so in 2005 when an opportunity arose to travel with the Sedgwick County Zoo director Mark Reed on safari, she went with her daughters and grandchildren. Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa! She loved it!
Other travels included Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, Macchu Picchu and an Amazon River Cruise, a Panama Canal/South America cruise, a Mediterranean cruise, and a Mexican Riviera Cruise. She loved being out on a ship in the ocean, and said she would love to retire to a cruise-ship if possible.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 10, 2022 at Heritage of Andover, 502 W. Central, Andover, with a private interment to follow.
