O'BRIEN, MARK ANTHONY , Army veteran, 49 passed away at his home in Rose Hill on February 5, 2024.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mark Anthony O'Brien, aged 49, on February 5, 2024, at his residence in Rose Hill. Born in St. Louis, MO, on January 16, 1975, to Kevin J. and Kathleen (Torrence) O'Brien, Mark was a cherished son, devoted father, loving partner, and respected veteran who led a life of service, courage, and commitment.
Raised in Wentzville, MO, Mark was a proud graduate of the local high school. Shortly after graduation, he embarked on a distinguished 24-year career in the Army, demonstrating a profound dedication to his country. His military journey was marked by diverse roles—from fighting forest fires in Montana and Washington to serving on border patrol, then as a Forward Observer, and concluding his active service in the field of Cybersecurity. Even after his active duty, Mark remained on Active Reserve, always ready to serve his country whenever called upon.
Following his military service, Mark continued to impact lives in Wichita as an Adjunct Professor at Friends University, where he shared his extensive knowledge in computer networking and cybersecurity. His dedication to safeguarding others extended to his role as an Information Security Officer for Veteran's Affairs, where he was responsible for protecting the data of 65 million veterans, VA employees, and patient providers nationwide.
Mark's passions were not confined to his professional life. He was an avid ham radio enthusiast, significantly contributing to the Wichita Amateur Radio Club, even serving as its President in 2020. His commitment to service was evident through his active participation on several non-profit boards in the Wichita area.
Mark's legacy is carried on by his beloved children, Raelyn Elizabeth O'Brien, Alexander Dean O'Brien, and Sean Patrick O'Brien; his significant other, Tiffany Crum; his siblings, Karena Velikan, Kristina Wray, Bethanie Leigh O'Brien, and Kiley Joseph O'Brien; his aunt Lisa Torrence-Ette and many other family, friends and battle buddies.
A Memorial Gathering to honor and celebrate Mark's life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Heritage Funeral Home, 502 W. Central Ave., Andover, with Military Honors to be performed by the Kansas Army National Guard at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wichita Area Radio Club in memory of Mark, honoring his love for ham radio and his commitment to community service.
Mark's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit of generosity, dedication, and love for his country and family will forever be remembered.
