Leon "Arch" Sherwood, Jr. , 91, entered eternal rest at 4:05 pm on October 17th, 2017 where he had been a patient of Regent Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Wichita, Kansas since June 30th. Arch's final days were spent surrounded by family and friends, and his unwavering faith in God, independent spirit, and concern for others were in full evidence until his passing.
A rch was born on September 19th, 1926 to Leon and Virginia (Knight) Sherwood in Independence, Kansas. Arch grew up in Independence, attended schools there and graduated from Independence High School. He studied at the University of Kansas, where he was a founding member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
A rch returned to Independence and married Jane Dorman in 1948 and became associated with his family in the operation of the A.G. Sherwood Construction Co. Arch later married Sherrie Kay Perkins in 1976 and sold his portion of the business to his cousin. He later worked for Midland Dev Co. from 1982-1985. In 1985, he began working for the City of Independence as the Street Superintendent until he retired in 1994. During his career in construction, Arch and his family built many streets and highways in Independence as well as surrounding towns and important structures such as Riverside Park fountain that Independence natives know and love. His pride and fondness for his community was always at the forefront of his life.
I ndependence was Arch's lifelong home, where he was an active member of the community.
A s a member of the First Presbyterian Church, he served on the Session as well as being the church superintendent for many years. Arch was a member of the Independence Country Club, volunteered for the American Cancer Society, contributed to the development of Riverside Park, delivered Meals on Wheels for 18 years, and was a founding member of the Independence Optimist International Club.
A rch's interests included golfing, reading, socializing with his coffee gang, vacationing with family, celebrating holidays, and watching football. Arch was known for his positive outlook and attitude, intelligence, wit and humor. He had an amazing love for animals and a voracious love for learning.
H e is predeceased by his parents, Leon and Virginia Sherwood and his wife Sherrie Perkins Sherwood. Arch is survived by his children, Kathy Clark, David Sherwood, Jami Calvert and Greg Taylor. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Jennifer Hastings, Nicole Taylor, Dane Calvert, Morgan Calvert and Austin Calvert.
A rch's life will be celebrated at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, Kansas on October 28th at 4:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Private graveside service will take place prior to the funeral ceremony.
A celebration of life reception will take place for friends and family immediately following the service at Independence Country Club.
