Jonathan "Jon" Layne
Hood
August 18, 1958 — August 4, 2026
Wichita, Kansas
Jon’s heart was always fullest when it came to those he loved.
Jonathan “Jon” Layne Hood, born August 18, 1958, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, at the age of 67. Those who had the privilege of knowing Jon will remember him as a man whose gentle spirit, unwavering loyalty, and infectious curiosity shaped a lifetime of cherished memories, remarkable accomplishments, and a legacy that will resonate for years to come.
Jon’s early years were spent cultivating his love of learning and adventure. He graduated from St. John High School, continuing his education at junior college in Hutchinson, and later accomplishing a significant milestone by graduating from Wichita State University in 1983 with a degree in electrical engineering. Never one to rest on his laurels, Jon returned to his studies in the 1990’s and earned his master’s degree in mechanical engineering. His passion for discovery and diligent pursuit of knowledge became not only personal hallmarks, but also the cornerstone of his storied career.
Jon’s professional journey began at KG&E and led him to Southwestern Bell in St. Louis. But it was at Boeing, where he began work on November 13th, 1987, that Jon found his vocational home for nearly four decades—amassing an impressive tenure of 38 years and 8 months. At Boeing, Jon was more than just an engineer, though his technical acumen was second to none. As a high contributing engineer in Materials & Processes and Flammability, as well as serving as a Unit Member Advisor, Compliance Verification Engineer, and Design Approval Engineer, Jon’s influence was profound. He was known as a titan and subject matter expert in aerospace. Among his many achievements, he played a pivotal role in assembling certification reports and witnessing testing for high-profile programs like the VC-25A, the distinguished craft known as Air Force One. Jon’s efforts were instrumental in shaping the operation of the OKC M&P Certification Team, where he ushered five engineering candidates through the rigorous Unit Member process and mentored countless colleagues in the world of Materials & Processes and FAA Certification. His impact on the engineering community was immense—his expertise, guidance, and encouragement will continue to inspire future generations.
Outside of work, Jon led a vibrant and joyful life. His passions filled every season with energy: he loved amusement parks and rollercoasters, was a casual runner, a voracious reader, and relished deep, meaningful conversations. He adored walks, exercise, and bicycling—particularly memorable were his rides across Kansas, a true testament to his adventurous, enduring spirit. He entertained family and friends with warmth and sincerity, and as a youth found joy in football, playing the trombone in band, through music, he contributed his voice as part of the New Life Gospel Quartet, infusing gatherings with song and camaraderie. As an adult he relished swimming, practicing yoga, long walks, going to the YMCA, and taking time to care for his body and mind.
He leaves behind a legacy defined by integrity, encouragement, and the joy he found in uplifting those close to him.
Jon’s heart was always fullest when it came to those he loved. He met the love of his life, Joyce Buss, at Barnes & Noble, and together they built a partnership rooted in deep love, unwavering support, laughter, and shared travels with family and friends to Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Israel, Jordan, California, Spain, Portugal, Florida, Tennessee, France, Ecuador, New York, Canada, and Alaska. Joyce stood beside him as wife and friend creating a safe harbor. Together their journey brought immeasurable happiness and the best five years of his life.
Jon’s reverence for family was matched only by his loyalty: he treasured his brother Joel Hood and his wife Tracy; his sister Cyndy Unruh and her husband Duane; his nieces and nephews, Landon Stout, Ce Chel Kresa, Jacob Hood, Sarah Kingsley; and Joyce’s grandchildren, Ethan Ramey, Kaelyn Ramey. Each relationship was marked by Jon’s deep respect, kindness, and an openness that welcomed others’ perspectives—traits that inspired those around him to feel valued and understood.
Jon is predeceased by his brother, Wendell, whose memory he always carried in his heart; his dedicated, loving parents, James Hood and Joyce (Hayes) Hood; and his first wife, Rosemary (Prosser) Hood, who he was married to in 1988 until she passed away in 2019.
Jon’s personality was a unique and beautiful tapestry: he was extremely intelligent, but socially awkward, a self-proclaimed nerd, but always respectful, valuing others’ opinions, radiating a childlike wonder, and profoundly loyal…especially to his wives, family, friends, and work. Those who knew him could count on his thoughtfulness and steadfast friendship. He leaves behind a legacy defined by integrity, encouragement, and the joy he found in uplifting those close to him.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance at Anchor Baptist Church, 14704 East Harry Street, Wichita, KS 67230. Visitation will take place on August 15, 2026, beginning at 2:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 2:30 PM.
Though Jon’s life was cut short too soon, the legacy of his achievements, the warmth of his love, and the spirit of his character will live on. He will be deeply missed, remembered always for his smile and the joy and wisdom he shared, and the countless hearts he touched along the way.
