FARTHING, JERRY, 63, Leon Police Chief and Cassoday Volunteer Fireman passed away on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Via Christi St. Francis. Jerry was born in Dallas, Texas on March 22, 1957 to Lloyd and Fern "Chapman" Farthing. He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and enlisted with the Army at age 17. Baking Science, not exactly a degree you would imagine a guy like Jerry would have but nonetheless he graduated from Kansas State with his Baking Science Degree. He was a Production Superintendent at Entenmanns Oroweat in Dallas, Texas where he met Anita and introduced her to fresh baked macadamia nut cookies straight from the line. In Lafayette, Louisiana he was a Plant Manager for Langlinais Bakery making New Orleans French Bread and retired from Wonderbread. In 1998 Anita told him that she wouldn't get married that year so on January 1, 1999 they married in Lafayette. They moved to El Dorado in July 2000 and Jerry started with KDOT where he got to know some people from the Turnpike Authority. In 2010 he joined the Kansas Turnpike Authority and then became the Manager for the Cassoday exit. After getting to know some of the folks from Cassoday he joined the Cassoday Volunteer Fire Department, then tested and received his Emergency Responder Endorsement. In 2017 Jerry attended the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and became the Chief of Police for Leon. He held memberships in the Knights of Columbus, 4 th Degree at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Andover; the Captain Edgar Dale Post 81 American Legion in El Dorado; was a board member of the El Dorado Rifle Range and was involved in many other endeavors and things to keep himself busy. Jerry loved to fish and boat even though he never caught anything and he couldn't swim. He enjoyed roadtrips and would throw the family in the car every time they got a new car and take it for it's inaugural road trip; needless to say they bought a lot of new cars. He was a jokester at heart, loving to scare people and laugh; and with his Baking Science Degree he loved to cook and bake and was very well known for his Stand Up Boy Scout Teddy Bear Cake. Jerry's greatest passion however was his family, he was a true patriarch that loved his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered and missed by many for his infectious laugh, his soft soothing voice during times of stress and his loving, caring, giving heart.
Jerry is survived by his wife Anita; daughters Kathy Ketter(Harry) of Lindale, TX, Trisha Farthing-Pack(Tim) of Lindale, TX, Candy Wright(Allen) of El Dorado; Lisa Wiggins(Richard) of Lindale, TX; stepsons Brian Brundage(Ashlee) of Wichita and Brett Brundage(Sonjia) also of Wichita; his siblings Garry Farthing of Shreveport, LA, Bill Farthing of Lake Livingston, TX; 15 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Fern and his sister Nancy Luellyn.
Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 29, 2020 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 123 N. Andover Rd. with interment following at Chelsea Cemetery( North of El Dorado Lake). A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at Brick and Mortar, 229 S. Emporia, Wichita at 2:00 p.m.
