Jean Marie Hamm, age 80, passed away surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life. She was born on February 14, 1945, in Georgia, to Robert and Ruth Higbee, a fitting Valentine's Day arrival for someone known for her big heart.

After several moves during her childhood, Jean's family settled near Walker, Minnesota, where she attended Catholic school. It was there that her mother became a teacher, and Jean flourished—especially in music. She was active in the school band and proudly twirled a baton, a glimpse of the joy and confidence she carried into adulthood.

Following high school, Jean married and began building the family that would always be the center of her world. She raised four children while working as a talented seamstress, creating uniforms, dresses, and intricate embroidery with remarkable skill. Her sewing was more than a job—it was a gift she shared generously with others.

Jean's capacity for love extended far beyond her own household. She became a foster parent, welcoming four additional children into her home, and often opened her door to neighborhood kids who needed extra care and guidance. To many, she was simply known as "the neighborhood mom."

She lived life with enthusiasm and humor. A devoted Elvis fan, Jean loved old rock-and-roll, dancing, and enjoying a rum and Coke or a red beer. She cherished traveling, camping, and the great outdoors. Whether working on a jigsaw puzzle, starting a board game, shuffling a deck of cards, or making sure every casino along the road was on the itinerary, Jean knew how to have fun and bring people together.

Jean was loving, accepting, and happiest when feeding a crowd. Family and friends will fondly remember her cooking—especially her beloved wacky cake, which was always made with care and shared with joy.

Jean is survived by her children Robert Hamm (Nancy), John Hamm, Tim Hamm (Angela), and Debbie Tombaugh (Mark); her brothers Tom Higbee and Dick Higbee; her grandchildren Elizabeth Jacobs, Kelsie Whitcomb, Jermie Whitcomb, Zachary Hamm, and Zoie Hamm; and her great-granddaughter Emily Jacobs.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Ruth Higbee; her husband Walter Hamm; her stepmother Ruth Higbee; her sister Cora Rogers; and her brother Orlando Higbee.

Jean Marie Hamm leaves behind a legacy of generosity, laughter, and unconditional love. Her home—and her heart—were always open, and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
