James Lee Pennington
A Life of Faith, Family, Love, and Laughter
James Lee Pennington, was born August 1947, and passed October 2026. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of faith, love, laughter, and extraordinary kindness. He was a man of quiet strength, unwavering convictions, and a generous heart, whose greatest accomplishment was not the success he achieved throughout his life, but the love, encouragement, and wisdom he shared so freely with everyone around him.
Born in Arkansas to Vernon and Jessie Pennington, James grew up in Wichita, Kansas, alongside his four siblings: Margaret, Lonny, Stanley, and Linda. His childhood was filled with adventure, mischief, and the special bond he shared with his brothers. The three Pennington boys spent their younger years exploring Wichita, finding trouble, and creating stories that would be retold with laughter for decades. James, often the natural leader of the group, later captured many of those hilarious childhood adventures in a book, preserving the memories of a time and a brotherhood he treasured throughout his life.
One of the most important moments in James's life came when his brother Stanley introduced him to a young woman named Stella. They were just 15 years old. James was the strong, quiet, confident young man with a reputation for being someone you didn't want to cross, while Stella was the beautiful, popular girl who seemed to be everyone's favorite. Whatever brought them together, it was the beginning of an extraordinary love story.
They began dating as teenagers, married shortly after Stella graduated from high school, and spent the next 60 years as devoted husband and wife, best friends, and inseparable companions. Through every adventure, success, hardship, and change that life brought, James and Stella remained steadfastly devoted to one another. They traveled together, worked side by side, raised their family, and shared a partnership built on love, loyalty, laughter, and a deep friendship. To those who knew them, it was always clear that they were each other's favorite person.
Together, they raised two sons, Mark and Matthew, who were blessed with a father whose love and support never wavered. James was present for every game, every event, and every milestone. He taught his sons to think independently, work hard, solve problems, and approach life with both intelligence and integrity. He was patient, protective, encouraging, and firm when he needed to be, always taking the time to explain not just what was right, but why it mattered. He believed deeply in the importance of balancing work and family, and he lived that belief every day. No professional accomplishment was ever more important to him than the people waiting at home.
James enjoyed an exceptional career in healthcare finance, where his intelligence, determination, and natural leadership helped him achieve success throughout his professional life. He was involved in establishing one of the nation's early Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and spent decades as a respected leader in the healthcare finance industry. His ability to understand complex challenges, develop solutions, and inspire confidence in others made him a valued colleague, executive, and mentor. In later years, he brought that same experience and wisdom to helping Matthew with his business, continuing to work, contribute, and stay active well into retirement.
Yet for all his professional success, James was never defined by his career. His priorities were simple and unshakable: God first, family always, and kindness toward others.
His Christian faith was the foundation of his life. He loved the Lord deeply and sought to live his beliefs through his actions, relationships, decisions, and treatment of others. His faith was genuine, his values steadfast, and his integrity a constant example to his family. He was a man who believed in doing what was right, standing by the people he loved, and extending grace and compassion wherever he could.
James also had an unforgettable sense of humor. Quick-witted, clever, and always ready with a joke or a perfectly timed remark, he could get the entire family laughing until nobody could remember what started it. Humor was woven into the fabric of the Pennington family, and James was often at the center of it. His laughter, storytelling, and playful spirit made ordinary moments memorable and family gatherings something to treasure.
He loved sports, especially sharing them with his sons and grandchildren. A talented softball and basketball player in his younger years, he maintained a lifelong enthusiasm for athletics and an equally enthusiastic, if somewhat less successful, relationship with golf. He was also remarkably talented at building, repairing, remodeling, and tackling nearly any home improvement project imaginable. There seemed to be nothing he couldn't figure out, and no project too ambitious to attempt, especially with Stella working alongside him.
But perhaps the most extraordinary thing about James was his ability to make people feel valued.
He had a rare gift for connecting with others. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or someone he'd met only moments earlier, James offered the same genuine warmth, kindness, and encouragement. People were naturally drawn to him. Strangers became friends, friends became family, and those who needed advice or reassurance somehow always knew they could turn to James.
He listened. He understood. He encouraged. And whenever someone needed help, he was there.
His sons would be hard-pressed to remember a time when their father wasn't available to offer advice, lend a hand, share a laugh, or simply remind them that they could accomplish whatever challenge stood before them. He possessed a remarkable ability to see the best in people and help them see it in themselves. His encouragement was limitless, his love unconditional, and his presence a steady source of comfort and confidence.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Stella; his sons, Mark and Matthew; his brothers, Lonny and Stanley; his sisters, Margaret and Linda; and the grandchildren and extended family who were blessed to share in his life.
Above all, James Lee Pennington will be remembered as a man whose faith guided him, whose family was his greatest joy, whose laughter brightened every room, and whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
He was strong without being harsh, wise without being boastful, successful without losing sight of what mattered, and endlessly generous with his time, love, and encouragement.
He was the person you called when you needed help, the voice you trusted when you needed guidance, and the steady presence you knew would always be there.
His family will miss his laughter, his stories, his wisdom, his reassuring strength, and the extraordinary love he gave so freely throughout his life.
The world is a little quieter without James in it, but the lives he touched will forever carry the warmth of his kindness, the strength of his example, and the joy of having known him.
His was a life well lived, a faith well kept, and a love that will never be forgotten.
