GFELLER, HAROLD ELDON, 94 , Army veteran, went to be with the Lord on September 30, 2022 at Homestead of El Dorado KS. Harold was born on February 27, 1928 in Wichita,KS to Arnold Robert and Alice Vera {Brenzikofer} Gfeller. Harold grew up South of Burns, KS on the family farm graduating from Burns High School in 1946 and attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church getting saved in Jesus' name at a very young age. After high school Harold worked on the family farm until he went into the Army in March of 1951. Harold was honorably discharged from the Army in 1954 and returned home marrying Mildred Jean Shanklin on June 24, 1956 in Wonsevu, KS. He began working at Boeing and later at Beech then during layoff period working odd jobs like at Sherman Williams and on the Turnpike and finally Union Tank where he retired at in 1994. Harold loved the Lord and his family and enjoyed the family life along with other various activities like games (domino's, puzzles, horseshoes and ping pong), sports (basketball, baseball, swimming, skating (where he met Jean), fishing and hunting. Faithful, Loving, kind, and very much family oriented (never met a stranger) are the best descriptions for Harold but he will always be remembered as a jack of all trades that loved working on things and tinkering (even at Homestead), an avid gardener, (Potatoes, Corn, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Sunflowers, Onions, Garlic, Peanuts, you name it, he had all green thumbs and fingers and could grow anything. Harold's faith was passed to his kids as he was always sure to take his family to church at Temple Baptist where he had been a member for over 60 years playing the harmonica and trumpet and even singing in the choir.
H arold is survived by his children Jim Gfeller of Birmingham, AL, Tim Gfeller (Pamela) of El Dorado, KS, Marilyn O'Bryan of Grapevine, TX and Carolyn Aikens (Gary) of Towanda, KS; grandchildren Megan, Jennifer, Kelly, Lyndie, Melissa, Daniel, Matthew, Rachel, Ashley, Amber, Cody and Corey; 14 great grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Jean (Shanklin) Gfeller; parents Arnold and Alice Gfeller; brothers Richard and Don Gfeller and son in law Michael T O'Bryan.
V isitation will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 206 E. Central Ave., El Dorado, KS. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Temple Baptist Church, 925 Douglas Rd., El Dorado, KS with Pastor Sheldon Smith officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Wonsevu Cemetery, Wonsevu, KS.
M emorial donations may be made in Harold's memory to Temple Baptist Church or Alzheimer's Association.
