Gary Lee
Soyez
May 21, 1943 — January 29, 2024
El Dorado
SOYEZ, GARY LEE, 80 , a man of adventure, integrity, and quiet strength, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, at his home in El Dorado, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 21, 1943, in Marion, Kansas, to Emile Soyez, Jr. and Irene {Regier} Soyez. Gary spent his formative years on a farm in Cedar Point, Kansas, where the family tended to a buffalo herd, instilling in him a deep appreciation for nature and hard work.
After graduating from Emporia State Teacher College with a degree in accounting, Gary answered the call to serve his country, joining the US Army from 1967 to 1969, bravely serving in Vietnam. On October 7, 1978, he married the love of his life, Ada Hash Jones, with whom he shared countless adventures, including driving Formula One cars in Las Vegas.
Gary's professional journey led him to a fulfilling career in trucking with Groendyke for 27 years, traversing the roads of the US and Canada. He was not only a dedicated worker but also a devoted member of his community, belonging to organizations such as the American Legion Capt Edgar Dale Post #81, the VFW, the NRA, and the El Dorado Senior Citizens Center. His faith was paramount, as he attended the First Church of the Nazarene in El Dorado for nearly five decades.
An avid outdoorsman, Gary found solace in fishing and hunting, and he had a passion for collecting various items at auctions, including old cars to house his growing collections. His distinctive hat collection was a testament to his travels, each hat holding memories of the places he visited. Yet, beyond his adventures and hobbies, Gary will be remembered most for his genuine love for people. He was a friend to all, known for his infectious smile and his quiet, yet profound, wisdom.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Ada; his children Andi Thomas (Brad), Chris Jones, Scott Jones (Pam), Bradley Jones (Billi), and Darrell Jones (Kacee); his siblings Jerry Lou Robinson (Steve) and Terry Soyez; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Emile and Irene, and his brother Ralph Soyez.
A memorial service to celebrate Gary's life will be held on March 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, located at 202 N Taylor St, El Dorado. In honoring Gary's memory, let us carry forward his spirit of adventure, kindness, and love for others.
