Gale William
Mcnemee
August 28, 1943 — December 14, 2024
El Dorado
Gale "Mac" William McNemee, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, educator, and coach passed away on December 14th in El Dorado, KS.
Mac was born on August 28th, 1943 in Kansas City, MO to Alvy W. McNemee and Merle E. (Albers) McNemee. He spent most of his childhood on his beloved family farm in Bendena, KS.
Mac attended Kansas State Teachers College (later known as Emporia State University) where he met his future wife Mary Elizabeth Cunningham. One week before graduating with his bachelor's in education, he and Mary were married in Turner, KS on May 22nd, 1965. They were delighted to welcome four children into the family in their first seven years of marriage.
Mac then launched his 33 year career in education. He taught high school math and coached various sports (serving most years as head coach for both boys' and girl's basketball) in four different Kansas districts: Garden Plain, his alma mater of Midway (Doniphan County), Courtland, then Lincoln where he retired in 1998. He was known as the teacher that always answered a question with a question. Although many students found it frustrating at the time, there are countless accounts of their appreciation when they later realized he was actually the teacher that made them think. He was certainly a beloved and respected teacher and coach. Mac also enjoyed various farming jobs during his summer breaks and later partnered in farming and custom cutting with his good friend Larry Tonne.
Mac is survived by his loving wife Mary who tirelessly cared for and oversaw his health and wellbeing for several years before his death. He is also survived by his son Matthew (Tami), daughter Michelle Robert (Quintin), and son Mark (Deborah); six granddaughters Rebecca Brandl (Kenneth), Mariel Hartung (Ehan), Rachel McNemee, Kailyn Robert, Renea McNemee, and Jena Markham (Gunnar); three grandsons Trey McNemee, Jolson Robert, and Gavin Robert, and one great granddaughter Teresa Brandl. He is also survived by his only sibling Paul McNemee of Virginia.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter Lela Elizabeth McNemee, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Noting a special relationship with his beloved aunt Mildred Albers.
Aside from the classroom and gym, Mac loved to be on a ball field, in a hayfield, on his family farm, and on a golf course. He even had the great pleasure of hitting a hole-in-one. He also, of course, enjoyed all of his children's and grandchildren's sports, performances and accomplishments and simply watching the families grow and flourish.
Thank you, Gale, Daddy, PawPaw, Mr. Mac, for being that steady, reliable man that quietly did the next right thing. You'll be deeply missed.
The family will have a private celebration of life for Mac at a later date. Cards and correspondence are welcome.
In honor of Mac's passion for education, memorial contributions can be made to Coach Mac Scholarship Fund ℅ Mark McNemee at 1957 Arlington, El Dorado, KS 67042. Proceeds will be used for a one-time scholarship at both Courtland (Pike Valley) and Lincoln High School for students interested in Math Education or other math fields.
