Eugene Carl Herrmann, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, kindness, and joyful memories.

Born on October 7, 1935, in Elyria, Ohio to Carl and Edith Herrmann, Eugene's early years were filled with a love of music and an unmistakable spirit for standing out. After moving with his family to Lithopolis, Ohio, he graduated from Groveport High School, where he discovered the Sousaphone—a choice that would forever distinguish him as the only student with a tuba, much to the delight of his classmates and band directors.

Following graduation, Eugene enrolled at Ohio State University. Though academia proved not to be his calling, his unquenchable thirst for new experiences led him to join the United States Army in 1954. He served with distinction for four years before transferring to the United States Navy, launching a journey that would shape much of his adult life.

While awaiting deployment, fate intervened on Main Street in El Dorado. A chance encounter—when a young woman stopped to offer Eugene and his companion a ride—sparked a romance that would define his life. After a courtship filled with long walks and shared laughter, Eugene married the love of his life, Mary, in 1960. Together, they built a family rich in love and adventure, welcoming three children—Carl, Forrest, and Richard —who would remain his pride and joy.

After retiring from the Navy, Eugene brought his skills and discipline to the aviation industry, carving out a respected career and ultimately retiring from Boeing. Yet, retirement could not contain his restless energy. He returned to the workforce, driving buses for Prestige Tours, where his genial nature and ready wit made every journey memorable for passengers and colleagues alike.

Eugene was a man of many passions. He found tranquility in fishing and the thrill of the hunt—sometimes catching the elusive prize but always savoring the moment. His hands and imagination brought beauty and utility to the world through woodworking and leather working. For several years Gene worked with the Flinthills Overland Wagon Train, where he served as the chuckwagon cook. Gene was a member of the El Dorado City Band where he enjoyed playing with his sons. He also participated in the pep band at Butler Community College. Gene was a member of the choir at First Baptist Church in El Dorado. Whether crafting a keepsake, mending a treasured item, playing in the band or singing in the choir, his creativity knew no bounds.

Above all, Eugene was known for his outgoing personality; he truly never knew a stranger. Whether being singled out at Silver Dollar City or making new friends at every turn, his warmth and humor left an impression on all who met him.
Eugene is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Herrmann; his sons Carl (Adria), Forrest (Beth), and Richard (Michelle); his sister, Martha Sturgill; ten cherished grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edith Herrmann, and his sister, Eunice.

Eugene's life was a testament to adventure, commitment, and the simple joys of family and friendship. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in peace, his stories and laughter echoing in the hearts of those he loved.
