Douglas Warren Fisher was born February 20, 1927 in Newton, Kansas, to Virgil L and Mae Fannie (Weiser) Fisher.  He grew up on and around the Fisher homestead southwest of Peabody, and graduated from Peabody High School in 1945.  He was drafted to serve in WWII immediately upon graduation and entered the Navy, where he served in the Pacific during the final days of the war.  He was allowed to wander the streets of Toyko immediately after Japanese surrender, and brought home many stories and items of interest. The destroyer ship on which he was assigned, the USS Furse, was then sent to participate in Atomic bomb testing in the Pacific, and he was proud to be among those counted as Atomic Veterans.

U pon honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned home to Peabody and in 1947 married his childhood sweetheart, Betty (Homan) Fisher. Together they farmed the Fisher and Homan homesteads, and raised their two children.

A fter their children were grown, Doug left the family farm to pursue other careers, including as an electrician owning Peabody Electric, and then many years as city administrator in Peabody, Meade, and Cheney.

U pon retirement, Doug and Betty moved to Haven to be near family, and he began a third career as city inspector for the development of several city municipal water systems.

U pon Betty's death in 2006, Doug continued to be active in and around his home in Haven.  He was most noted for his daily golf cart rides around town to 'check things out', and spending time at the Haven Senior Center watching countless games of pool.

A fter a recent struggle with declining health, Doug passed away peacefully on September 27, 2017.  His survivors include son Dennis Fisher (Janet) of Denton, Texas;  daughter Paula Scott (Glenn Reed) of Haven;  grandchildren Alex Fisher (Mary) of King George, Virginia;  Emily Dickson (Tim)  of Round Hill, Virginia; Andrew Fisher  (Shauna) of Valley View, Texas;  Christopher Scott of Haven; and Jessica Scott (David Aujero) of Brooklyn, New York.   Other survivors include 13 great grandchildren; brother Clinton Fisher (Phyllis) of Burrton; sister Carmen South of Peabody; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

F uneral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Peabody United Methodist Church, the same church in which he was married 70 years before.  Interment will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, where his body will be laid to rest beside his wife Betty and near his 3 generations of ancestral Fishers that also called Peabody home.

M emorials may be sent to the Peabody American Legion, Peabody, Kansas, where he had been a lifetime member.
