Delbert Eugene
Denayer
July 17, 1952 — September 12, 2023
Andover
Delbert Eugene Denayer , a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 71. Delbert was born on July 17, 1952, in Wichita, Kansas, to his proud parents Ambrose and Leo "Mangum" Denayer. He grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1970.
Delbert's journey through life was marked by a profound passion for mechanics and engineering, which began to flourish during his high school years when he worked at a local gas station in Riverside. Later, he honed his skills further while employed by the Eddy family at their car dealerships, including Eddy's Toyota and Stevens Chrysler/Dodge, dedicating an impressive 20 years of his life to this endeavor.
Delbert was known as a true mechanical wizard, capable of fixing anything he set his mind to, a talent that ultimately led him to establish his own business, Denayer's Buggies, specializing in the repair of Volkswagens. His remarkable abilities earned him the unofficial title of an engineer without a degree.
Beyond the confines of his workshop, Delbert shared his love for Volkswagen by venturing into the sand dunes with his sons, where he became renowned for having the "Fastest buggy at the dunes" for a significant period. He cherished his time spent with his boys, engaging in activities such as duck and goose hunting, and even trying his hand at taxidermy.
In the later stages of his life, Delbert explored new horizons, buying and selling Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He partnered in the business "Harleys 4U" with a friend, running the business for several years before encountering a name change requirement. Not one to shy away from adventure, Delbert became a pilot at the age of 60, owning his plane, affectionately named "Chucky," until last year. He continued to foster his love of flying by working as a line service technician at the Augusta Airport for the past 8 years.
Following the sale of his plane, Delbert's passion for motorcycles remained undiminished. He and his wife, Gwen Paige, embarked on road trips on their Harley and CanAm, most recently traversing Route 66, from Cadillac Ranch in Texas to California.
Delbert was not only a man of action but also enjoyed leisurely activities. Over the years he enjoyed many drag races, swap meets, and numerous road trips on his Harleys. He also enjoyed shooting his guns and hanging out with his many friends in his man cave.
Perhaps what endeared Delbert to so many was his outgoing and talkative nature. He never met a stranger and possessed an incredible friendliness and easygoing demeanor that allowed him to connect with people from all walks of life. Even in moments of stubbornness, his unwavering kindness shone through.
Delbert is survived by his devoted wife, Gwen, and leaves behind a legacy of love and memories cherished by his sons, Kelcey Denayer (Kay) and Corey Denayer, his daughter, Julie Ramsdale (Alan), and their children, Andrew Nuessen and Zachary Nuessen. He also leaves behind his grandson, Isaac Denayer, whose father, Justin, preceded him in death in 2021, along with many other cherished family members and close friends. Delbert Denayer was also preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Leo, whose legacy of resilience and love he carried throughout his remarkable life.
Delbert's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his zest for life and boundless kindness will continue to inspire us all. May he rest in eternal peace, forever riding on the highways of our fondest memories.
