Carl Norman
Buss
February 2, 1944 — March 17, 2021
Wichita
BUSS, CARL NORMAN, 77 , passed away on March 17, 2021 at his home with his loving family and friends. Carl was born in Warwick, NY on February 2, 1944 to Carl Frederick "Gramps" and Elizabeth Forshee Buss.
A fter graduating from high school in New York, as a very independent youth Carl joined the Air Force so that he could travel; it took him to Plattsburgh, NY and later Wichita, KS working in the missile silos. During his service Carl worked part-time for several gas stations continuing his father's strong work ethic and mantra "he who works lives". Carl's first civilian job was working at a finance company in collections. It was there he met and maintained close friendships that lasted throughout their lives. He then went to work at Jochem, Sargent, and Blaes law office in the Farmers and Bankers Building. It was during this time that he met his future bride, Joyce Messenbrink. Carl then took a position at Curfman, Harris and Weigand in early 1979 as their office manager. A couple of years later he became the manager of Rental World, Inc. and eventually a co-owner. After selling Rental World, Inc. Carl still felt the need to continue to work "for the health of it" so he began his second career as a dental technician at Patterson Dental which continued until he ventured out on his own in 2014 at age 70. Carl Buss provided dental technician services throughout the Wichita area garnering the respect of the dentists and their staff he serviced until Covid hit Wichita, KS in 2020.
C arl and Joyce married on October 10, 1983. Summers were spent at the lake camping and waterskiing with the kids and various trips to visit with extended family including many family cruises. They enjoyed motorcycling, snow skiing, traveling and vacationing across the United States. International travel included France, Mexico, Greece, China, Japan, Peru, Ireland, Ecuador, and Vietnam.
C arl's hobby and passion was flying and though he was instrument and commercial rated he only flew privately. Carl will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, jokes, and one-liners that he told even while suffering with dementia and glioblastoma.
C arl is survived by "the love of his life" and wife, Joyce, or "Rejoice" as Gramps called her; his children Debbie, Chris and Becky; siblings Dorothy "Bunny" Carin and Catherine "Kitt" Florell; grandchildren Ethan and Kaelyn…whom Mimi and Poppie "love with all of their hearts"; and nephews Todd Florell and Jeff Carin. Carl's brothers Douglas "Buster" Buss and Richard "Dick" Buss passed before him.
C elebration of life will be held on April 24, 2021.
