Bobby
Johnson
April 16, 1926 — December 16, 2020
Andover
Johnson, Bobby (Bob) L., 94 , died peacefully on December 16, 2020 in Andover, KS. Bob was born and grew up on a dairy farm, graduated from high school near Joplin, MO at age 16, worked as a butcher, ambulance driver, mortuary employee, and car salesman until he joined the Navy on his 18th birthday. Bob served as a Flight navigator/radio operator in WWII and Korean Wars. While in the Navy, he played baseball in Jacksonville, FL; Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, CA (he practiced with the San Diego Padres - had to move back to Missouri to work or could possibly made a MLB career)! Bob received the Korean Service Medal with One Star, the China Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Ribbon. In April 1945, Bob and Doris were married while Bob was home from the Navy on a weekend pass. Bob and Doris lived in CA, FL, St. Louis and Joplin, Mo, Chanute, KS (Bob played baseball for the New York Giants farm team in the late 1940s), Kansas City and Wichita, KS. Bob's oldest son, Gary, played on a Westside Athletics ball team in the 1970s. One evening, Bob showed up to practice because Gary mentioned they were short a player. These 25+year-old men thought, "who's this old man in his late 40s joining our team?" After the first game, they were unhappy if "the old man" didn't show up because he hit several home runs every season! In 1956, the owners of H&R Block in Kansas City hired Bob while he attended and graduated with honors from the University of Kansas City (now UMKC). Two years later in 1958, He moved to Wichita, KS and opened offices there and several surrounding cities. Bob served in management positions over his 38-year career with H&R Block including Regional Director, District Manager and Satellite Director. He always said he was fortunate to meet and work with some special people. Bob was a regular on KAKE TV during tax season providing advice to Kansans. He was an amazing golfer as he made two hole-in-ones and won several city/club championships. Bob and Doris loved playing golf and cards with friends at Rolling Hills and Crestview Country Clubs. For decades, they were also members of Westlink Christian Church where Bob served as a Deacon. Bob loved to fly small aircraft, entertain at their lake house and yachting on Grand Lake! Bob & Doris enjoyed traveling the USA, Europe and spending time with family and friends as "snowbirds" in Arizona! Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Doris; his daughter, Vicki; his parents; his older brother; "the twins-younger brother and younger sister," and infant/triplet sibling. Survivors: sons, Gary (Jean) and Steve Johnson; daughter, Sheri (Don) Payne; grandchildren: Jeremy (Amelia) Johnson, Travis (Anna) Johnson, Chandler (Zachary) Wellner, Ashley Payne (Fiancé, Keegan) and Brock Payne; 8 great grandchildren: Jordan and Jaina Johnson; Bailey, Abby, Callie, and Dustin Johnson; Easton and Ryker Wellner. We appreciate and thank Rae and Amanda with Interim Hospice of Wichita; Tori and Mary with Interim Healthcare; Stephanie, Jacqueline, Jennifer, Bobbi, Chelsea, Miriam, Elijah, Ashleigh, and several "angels" at Life Care Center of Andover.
Celebration of Bob & Doris' lives will be held in April 2021 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita, KS. Please text Sheri or email at sheripayne@cox.net for details and to RSVP.
