Antonio "Tony"
C. Durano, Jr., M.D.
July 13, 1929 — February 3, 2023
Wichita
Dr. Antonio "Tony" C. Durano Jr. M.D. died on February 3, 2023 at the age of 93 surrounded by his family in Wichita, Kansas.
Tony was born on July 13, 1929 in Danao City, Cebu, Philippines, the oldest of 10 children born to Antonio M. and Roberta (Cala) Durano. In spring 1945, the US Army arrived at Talisay Beach near his home in Cebu. At the age of 15, Tony spent three months volunteering as an interpreter/guide for the Americal Division of the US Army as they liberated the island.
Tony went on to earn his medical degree at Manila Central University in 1956, before immigrating to the United States in 1957. He completed his residency in urology at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita and opened a private practice in the city, which he ran until 2005. He then continued practicing general medicine in western Kansas in the communities of Elkhart, Ulysses and Liberal until 2017. Tony was always praised for his excellent bedside manner and his kind and compassionate care.
Tony had many passions, including gardening, cooking his favorite Filipino dishes, playing the ukulele, hunting, and being a history buff. He especially loved WWII history, as he lived through the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and the subsequent liberation by the USA. He passed down his love of hunting to his sons and grandchildren, and took down his last pheasant at the age of 87.
Tony married Janice R. Johnson in 1959 and together they had three children, Rebecca, Tony III, and Rich. In 1975, the family moved to Pine Hills Farm, a rural property south of Andover, KS, where they spent many happy years raising their family.
Tony is survived by his daughter Rebecca (Steve) Allen and her children Erika (Kamil) Stasiuewicz, Angie (Ryan) Daugherty, Tori Allen, and Mara Allen; son Tony (Cathy) Durano and his children Lauren (Gavin) Smith and Alex Durano; son Rich and his children Shyla (Zach) Kaufman, Danni (Jed) Sullivan, and Alora Durano, and 15 great-grandchildren; siblings: George Durano; Eustacio Durano; Asuncion Durano Rivera, Natividad Durano Almeda, Bibiana; Floro Durano; Roy Durano and Kay Galeos Durano.
He is preceded in death by his former wife, Janice, parents, and his brothers Cesar and Floro.
